Staying in Poland After Studies: 7 Things That Decide Your Residence Path (2026)

Stay in Poland After Studies 2026: 7 Key Points

Stay in Poland after studies in 2026: how student years count for EU residency, when to switch to a work permit, and the 9-month graduate option. Ask us.

It's the second year of your master's in Warsaw. You've got a part-time job, a student karta pobytu in your wallet, and a vague plan: finish the degree, then "see what happens." Then a friend tells you that his five years of study won't count as five years toward permanent residence. Wait, what?

Watch: STUDY IN POLAND → STAY & WORK: 7 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW 🇵🇱

That moment of panic is common, and it's usually avoidable. If you want to stay in Poland after studies, your residence path needs planning long before graduation day. We went through the main points in the short video right below. Here, we add what a video can't fit: steps, documents, fees and the mistakes we see most often.

Do my student years actually count toward EU long-term residency?

Only partly. For the 5-year residence period needed for EU long-term resident status, time spent in Poland on a student basis is counted at half. Time spent on part-time studies isn't counted at all. So five years of full-time study does not give you five years toward the permit.

There's a second catch. According to the UDSC guidance on the EU long-term resident permit, you can't apply for it while your stay is based on studies. You first need a different basis for residence, such as work. That's why the question "when do I switch?" matters so much.

For the permit itself you'll also need continuous legal residence, stable and regular income, health insurance and Polish at B1 level, confirmed with documents from an official list. The state fee is PLN 640, plus PLN 100 for the card. That's the finish line. The student years are only a head start.

Why can a work-based residence permit change everything?

Because time on a work-based permit counts toward the 5 years in full, not at half. Every year you spend on work-based residence moves you closer to permanent status twice as fast as a year spent as a student.

A temporary residence and work permit also lets you build the paper trail the later permit asks for: contracts, ZUS contributions, tax filings, stable income. Students often work informally or on small contracts. Moving onto a proper work basis turns that effort into evidence.

The fee depends on the permit type. A temporary residence and work permit carries a PLN 440 state fee. Most other temporary permits, including the student permit, carry PLN 340. The residence card is a separate PLN 100. Check the current amounts on the MOS fee page before paying, because they are the only figures that count.

One trade-off: a permit tied to an employer is only as stable as that employer. Read what happens to your case when the employer changes before you sign anything.

So when does it make sense to switch from student to work-based residence?

There's no single right date. But three situations usually justify looking at a switch early:

If the purpose of your stay changes, you file a new application based on the new circumstances. In practice, that means a new case through MOS. You'll need a PESEL and a Profil Zaufany to use it. The application must be filed no later than the last day of your legal stay. Not the week after. Not "when the employer is ready."

If you're a Filipino or other international student worried about the gap after graduation, our guide on keeping legal status after studies walks through the same logic.

What's the October student rush, and why does applying earlier help?

The academic year starts, and thousands of students file or extend their permits at about the same time. Voivodeship offices get a surge of similar cases in autumn. We can't give you an official number for it, but the pattern is familiar to anyone who has watched offices at the start of October.

What does that mean for you? If your case can be filed earlier, it enters the queue before the wave. Late filers often sit behind a larger pile. Filing early doesn't guarantee a fast decision, but it removes one avoidable delay. Collect your documents in the summer: enrolment confirmation, insurance, proof of funds, proof of accommodation.

The deadline rule stays the same. You file before your legal stay ends. If you file in time, you're generally protected while the office reviews the case. Missing the date is the mistake that no later effort can fix.

Does the voivodeship office handling your case change your waiting time?

Yes. Your case goes to the voivodeship office that is competent for your place of residence, and offices differ in workload and speed. A case in one region can move noticeably faster or slower than the same case in another. There is no official ranking and we won't pretend otherwise.

Practical consequences: don't assume a friend's timeline applies to you if they live in a different voivodeship. And if the office goes beyond a reasonable time, there are formal tools. See what a ponaglenie actually does before you rely on phone calls.

Full-time or part-time: how does your study type affect working in Poland?

This is where many students get caught. A full-time student on a valid visa or permit can generally work without a separate work permit. Part-time studies and postgraduate courses are treated differently. Those permits are issued for "nauka" (learning), not "studia" (studies), and they don't carry the same work rights. You may need a work permit.

Part-time permits are also issued for shorter periods, up to 12 months. And the time doesn't count toward the 5 years at all.

There's one more trap for full-time students who work a lot. Offices can ask whether you're really in Poland to study. If the work looks like the real reason for your stay, the permit may be refused when the credibility of your stated purpose is in doubt. Keep attendance, grades and credits in order.

Rohit, a composite example, is an Indian student on full-time studies who worked 35 hours a week in a warehouse and missed most classes. His extension was questioned. Students like him are not forced out, but they have to prove the studies are real. Illustrative case, not a real client.

What are your options right after graduation?

The main bridge is the temporary residence permit for graduates looking for work. It is granted once, directly after you complete your studies, for 9 months. You file through MOS on or before your last legal day. The MOS graduate permit page lists the requirements.

Typical documents:

Your other route is a job offer that leads to a temporary residence and work permit. Many graduates run both in parallel: they use the 9 months to find an employer, then switch. The 9-month permit can't be repeated, so the clock matters.

Once you're on a work basis, the long game opens up. Our guide to the real 5-year path to permanent residence in Poland shows how the years add up. You can also read the official overview on gov.pl/web/cudzoziemcy.

Practical tip: Put three dates in your phone today: the last day of your legal stay, the date your study permit ends, and the date you want your first work contract to start. Every plan is built around the first one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do my 4 years of full-time studies count as 4 years toward permanent residence?

No. Study time on a visa or student permit counts at half, so 4 years is treated as roughly 2. Part-time studies aren't counted. Only time on other legal bases, such as work, counts in full toward the 5 years.

Can I apply for EU long-term residency while I'm still a student?

No. You can't apply while your stay is based on studies. You first need another basis for residence, such as a work-based permit, and then you meet the 5-year, income, insurance and B1 Polish conditions.

Can I work as a full-time student without a work permit?

Generally yes, if you're on full-time studies with a valid visa or permit. Part-time or "nauka" permits don't give the same right. Heavy work that raises doubts about your real study purpose can put an extension at risk.

I'm graduating next month. How long do I have to apply for the 9-month permit?

You must file through MOS no later than the last day of your legal stay. The permit is granted once, directly after studies. Prepare the diploma, insurance, funds and accommodation proof before graduation so you don't lose days.
